The European Sustainable Development Week is an initiative that seeks to increase the awareness of sustainable development giving them a visible platform from which they may grow.

The ESDW is supported by the European Sustainable Development Network in order to encourage and highlight projects, activities and events which promote sustainable development.

One of the core documents for this initiative is the recenetly adopted 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This agenda lays out a plan of action for people, the planet and their undeniable connectedness in the hopes of promoting prosperity, equality, peace and freedom. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals and their 169 targets were announced in the last number of months, these sustainable development goals seek to rectify and solve the issues and problems of the world, which the Millennium Goals did not achieve. They seek to address the large amount of human rights abuses in the world, to achieve gender equality and empower women throughout the world. They also place a larger emphasis on climate change than the Millennium Development Goals. The Sustainable Development Goals will work to achieve their objectives over the next fifteen years.

Already, there are more than 3000 initiatives registered in 38 different countries and registration is still open to those who wish to organise something to promote sustainable development. This allows everyone to become involved and excited in the initiative, there are no rules or guidelines as to what should be done.

Worth mentioning is also the Sustainable Energy Week. So-called Energy Days take place throughout the month of June across all of Europe. The Policy Conference dedicated to sustainable energy policy issues will take place from the 14th of June until the 16th of June 2016 and will be held in Brussels’ Schuman district.
