Biography

His Royal Highness (HRH) Raja Remigius Kanagarajah is a Descendant of the Royal Family of Jaffna, a kingdom that existed for more than 400 years ago.

Career
On 4 February 1948, Ceylon gained Independence from British colonial rule. On 22 May 1972, with the adoption of a new constitution that ended 'Dominion Status', Ceylon became a republic within the Commonwealth, and the official name of the country was changed to "Free, Sovereign and Independent Republic of Sri Lanka".

HRH Kanagarajah is a member of The International Monarchist League in London as well as the Southeast Asia Imperial and Royal League that promotes friendship between Royal Families of Southeast Asia. He was baptized a Catholic, but takes part in many Hindu religious ceremonies and follows the traditions and customs of his ancestors.

HRH took over as the head of the Royal House of Jaffna 11 years ago and is now living in exile in The Hague in the Netherlands. In 2012 he told the European Parliament that if he was asked, he would return to his native Sri Lanka, where he still have support from the people.

HRH of Jaffna is the Patron of The Netherlands Red Cross and The Independent Overseas Command of the Legion of Frontiersmen. He is also fluent in Tamil, English, Sinhalese and Dutch.
