Shaki, one of the most ancient and colourful cities of Azerbaijan, will soon host the next edition of the ‘Uch Mekan‘ International Theatre Festival, with 8 participant countries and professional and amateur performances. The Festival opens the 144th theatre season in Azerbaijan and will be held from 15th to 24th September.

Countries participating in the ‘Uch Mekan‘ Festival include Turkey, Russia, Georgia, Iran, Ukraine, Turkey, and the UAE. Azerbaijan will be represented at the event by the State Academic Drama Theatre, State Russian Drama Theatre, State Puppet Theatre, Shaki State Drama Theatre and Ganja State Drama Theatre.

The Festival is co-organized by Azerbaijan's Culture and Tourism Ministry, Shaki City Executive Authority and the Union of Theater Figures. The whole festival belongs to the ‘Azerbaijani Theatre in 2009 – 2019’ state program to support theatre.

After the festival, the heads of state theatres of the member countries of the International Organization of Turkic Culture (TURKSOY) will meet for the fifth time in Shaki. TURKSOY, also known as the UNESCO of the Turkic World, was established in 1993 with the participation of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Turkey’s Culture Ministers.

The festival’s host city, Shaki, is famous for its historical monuments and hosted the first International Theater Festival in 2014. The city also has a great density of cultural resources and monuments that include 2700 years of Azerbaijani history, and has always played a central role in Azerbaijani art and architecture. The city is also the scene of much of the action in Bertolt Brecht play, ‘The Caucasian Chalk Circle’.
