Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Macedonia
Minister Nikola Popovski acquired a Bachelor Degree in Economics from the University of Skopje in 2002. He also attended the Economics Faculty at the University of Nice, and in 2004 acquired a Master in Languages and International Trade at the EU University of Rennes and the University of Skopje. In 2005 he acquired a Master of the Arts at the European Economic Studies College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium.
Between 1999 and 2001 Popovski occupied the position of Manager’s assistant at the British Royal Engineers Company and from 2003 to 2004 he worked at the Analysis and Development Department of the Rouen Port Authorities. Between 2001 and 2004, Popovski was Secretary of the Embassy of the French Republic to the Republic of Macedonia. Between 2005 and 2006 he was Client Relationship Manager at the DEPFA Bank Headquarters in Dublin. From 2006 to 2009 he acted as Team leader at the Joint Research Centre at the European Commission and between 2010 and 2011 he was appointed Ambassador and Head of the Mission of the Republic of Macedonia to the EU. From the European Commission, he also received the Excellence Award for the contribution to the EU’s Western Balkan Policy.
Popovski was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Macedonia on 28th July 2011, renewing his position on 24th June 2016, when he was also appointed Deputy Prime Minister.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Macedonia continuously works to fulfil the highest priorities in the foreign policy of the country, such as: full-fledged NATO membership and starting membership negotiations with the European Union. The country is putting efforts to promote the Macedonian economic interests and to attract foreign investments in the country. These efforts are in compliance with the goals of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia to provide higher standards and wellbeing for all citizens. Therefore, activities are being undertaken to reinforce the position of the Republic of Macedonia within the international community by developing bilateral relations, good-neighbourly relations, regional cooperation and cooperation within the multilateral organizations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Macedonia is devoted to the continuous establishment and training of the diplomatic staff and improvement of the technical conditions needed for the functioning of both the Ministry and the Diplomatic and Consular missions of the Republic of Macedonia. These are the necessary preconditions for a successful achievement of the objectives such as: enhancement of the consular services for the Macedonian and foreign citizens, status improvement of the Macedonian national and linguistic minorities throughout the world, and care for the Diaspora.
The strategic and long-term goals of the foreign policy of the Republic of Macedonia are full-fledged EU and NATO membership for Macedonia, development and enhancement of the good-neighbourly relations and regional cooperation.
