In order to enhance the visibility of Taiwanese culture on the international stage, the Ministry of Culture in Taiwan brought Taiwan’s Dance Troupes to the biennial International Dance Exhibition, “Internationale Tanzmesse NRW”, in Düsseldorf, Germany. The Dance Troupes will be performing from August 30th through September 2016.

The Internationale Tanzmesse NRW is the largest contemporary dance exhibition in the world. Taking place every two years in Düsseldorf, Germany, the exhibition gathers 1600 artists from over 50 countries across Europe, America, Asia and Africa to show their styles and exchange ideas with professional audiences. Performances, result presentations, lectures and exhibitions provide rich cultural exchange.

Starting from 2008, the Ministry of Culture in Taiwan has been actively sending groups of outstanding performers to participate in this event. It is viewed as an effective way to promote Dance Troupes in Taiwan and for strengthening soft power initiatives.

Taiwan’s contemporary dance choreographies, influenced by its multi-cultural background, are diverse and lively. From the renowned Cloud Gate Dance Troupe which presenting traditional beauty, literature or history with combination of western elements, to the re-creation of different indigenous music and digital dance, dance is a way to show the vitality and development of culture.

During the exhibition, a display unit to present stories of Taiwan’s contemporary dance was set up in the name of “Dance in Taiwan”, carried out by the National Theater & Concert Hall and the Ministry of Culture. Videos and exhibition catalogues of contemporary dance in Taiwan were provided to help introduce the audience to Taiwanese culture.

Three Taiwanese Dance Troupes, chosen directly by the Internationale Tanzmesse NRW, performed their projects on stage, promoting Taiwan’s dance. The projects representing Taiwan include Meimage Dance’s “Camouflage,” B.DANCE’s “Hugin/Munin (Thought and Memory)” and In Theatre’s “Tschüss!! Bunny (Goodbye!! Bunny)”.
