April 20th, 2016

The 55th edition of the Salone del Mobile took place in Milano from the 12th to the 17th of April, 2016. It is an event dedicated to benchmark the furnishing and design sectors of the past, the present and the future, mixing business and culture. It was founded in 1961 with the aim to spread Italian products and recently it has achieved a worldwide recognition. Some numbers can explain better its scale and dimension: every year 2,500 exhibitors, more than 300,000 visitors coming from more that 160 countries and with around 5,000 accredited journalists participating.

In addition, to the main exhibition there are parallel events, meetings and presentations, in order to promote furnishing and design excellence from all over the world. Some examples are the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, the biennial EuroCucina, and its collateral exhibition: FTK (Technology For the Kitchen), and the International Bathroom Exhibition. The first one was launched in 1989 and it is held annually showing a wide offer of accessories, objects, ornaments, decorations, fabrics from classical to design. The second parallel event, started in 1974, showcased all the latest high quality kitchens and the latest technology for “cooking” and living in the kitchen space. Finally, the International Bathroom Exhibition was presented in 2003 with the aim to show the latest evolution of the domestic bathroom, focusing on the new technologies and on the new green products.

This year the theme of SaloneSatellite, the event dedicated to award young designers, has been "New Materials, New Design". The Selection Committee for the award is composed by renowned international figures from the worlds of design, manufacturing and communication and the prize-giving ceremony took place with the participation of the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. In 2014, SaloneSatellite, received the award for career achievement Compasso d'Oro for having "been responsible for the emergence of many young design talents, nationally and internationally".

The International nature of the Salone del Mobile can be also seen in its Saloni Worldwide. Indeed, from the 12th to the 15th of October 2016 the Salone WorldWide Moscow will take place and from the 19th to the 21st of November 2016 the first edition of the Salone WorldWide Shanghai will be held.
