Biography

The Hon. Anna Diamantopoulou is President of the Greek think tank "TO DIKTIO" and former Minister of Education. She is also the former European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities in the Prodi Commission, a post she held from 1999 to 2004.

Anna Diamantopoulou graduated from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Civil Engineering Department) and obtained a Master's Degree in regional Development from the Panteion University of Athens. She began her political career began in 1984. In 1986, she was appointed as Secretary General for Adult Education and later for Youth. As Secretary-General for Adult Education and Secretary-General for Youth, she introduced various programs such as social tourism for young people and specialized training programs for the military. 

In 1993 she was appointed President of the Hellenic Organization of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and Handicraft (EOMMEX) and after this post became the Secretary General for Industry. In 1996, she was elected as the first Member of Parliament (MP) for Kozani and was appointed Deputy Minister for Development.

Ms. Diamantopoulou has published several works, including: Intelligent Greece; European Integration and Governance; A Comparison with the US Model in Transatlantic Relations: Cooperation or Competition; and The Future of Europe: A Discussion for All -  A Question of Participation.
