U.S. Under Secretary of State for Pubic Diplomacy and Public Affairs, Tara Sonenshine, recently spoke at NPR Headquarters in Washington D.C. during a conference organized and sponsored by the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin.
According to Sonenshine, the United States represents the ultimate cultural experiment. The “237 year narrative of bringing people from all corners of the world” gives the U.S. a responsibility to employ cultural diplomacy, Sonenshine says. And even though there are challenges, the Under Secretary believes the internet and social media can create new forms of dialog and spread information.
Tara Sonenshine was previously Vice President of the United States Institute of Peace and worked in the Clinton Administration as Director of Foreign Policy Planning and Deputy Director of Communications for the National Security Council.
