This past spring, NPR’s Vice President of Programming Eric Nuzum spoke at the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin about the future of radio and NPR’s unique Berlin Bureau. Nuzum reviewed the 1967 Public Broadcasting Act passed by the U.S. Congress, legislation that first established NPR, explaining that all member stations are independently owned and operated. He also stressed unique aspects of the non-commercial model followed by NPR and member stations.Well over three million listeners and donors, along with universities, corporate sponsors, foundations, federal and state local governments each year contribute to a healthy and diversified pool of revenue to make this operation work. NPR is the leading radio network in the U.S. and operates 17 international bureaus, including one in Berlin.NPR Berlin is the only FM station licensed outside the U.S., and Nuzum says he hopes NPR Berlin will continue to grow in the future. You can listen to his presentation at the ICD Saturday, February 1 at 19.00, and Monday, February 3 at 08.00 on NPR Berlin.
