Biography

The Hon. George Papaconstantinou is the former Minster for the Environment, Energy and Climate Change and former Minister for Finance of Greece.

Academic Career

The Hon. George Papconstantinou graduated from the London School of Economics before studying for a Master of Arts in Economics from New York University and then a Ph.D in Economics from the London School of Economics.

Career

His first position was as a senior economist at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris from 1988 to 1998. After this posting he returned to Greece as an advisor to the Prime Minister. In 2000 he was appointed Special Secretary for the Information Society at the Ministry of Economy and Finance. He worked as an economic advisor in a number of different roles as well as teaching economics at the Department of Management Science and Technology at Athens University of Economics and Business. His political career began in May 2005 was he was elected as a member of the National Council of PASOK. In September 2007 he was elected as a member of the Hellenic Parliament to represent the district of Kozani. He ran as a candidate for the European Parliament in 2009 and was elected as an MEP in June 2009. He was appointed Finance Minister in October 2009. In the government reshuffle of June 2010, he was appointed as Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Change.
